Description:
This self-paced training course defines a learning path through the basics about Clarity and Unity of invention, with an emphasis on practical examples (chemistry and non-chemistry). Because both topics require a case-based approach, the learning path guides the user through the different topics by means of introductory videos and proposes exercises (tests) and optional assignments.
Virtual classroom sessions allow for direct interaction with expert tutors from the European Patent Office as well as an online forum.
Certificates will be issued to participants who have passed the required tests.
We recommend combining this course with the entry-level on-line course on Patentability requirements (self-paced course in https://e-courses.epo.org).

On completion of the course participants will be able to apply the criteria for clarity and unity of invention in line with EPO practice.
Content:
The distance learning course will explain in detail the background theory and methodologies with reference to Clarity and Unity of invention according to the EPC:
Clarity under Article 84 EPC Clarity and sufficiency of disclosure (Article 83 EPC) Unity of invention under Article 82 EPC Methods for determining unity of invention Practical exercises with different degrees of difficulty Assignment
Methodology:
A balanced mix of theory and practice, providing for interactive discussions by means of webinars and an online forum, will help to generate new knowledge, clarify open questions and allow for immediately putting into practice the acquired know-how.
Participants should have a minimum of two years experience of searching or examining patent applications. A good command of spoken and written English is required.
Technical requirements: In order to attend the on-line course participants need a computer with an internet browser and a high-speed broadband internet connection. For the virtual classrooms, the EPO uses Cisco WebEX, so initially some WebEX software will be installed on your computer. Security settings on local Firewalls need to be checked. For more information please see the "VC guidelines for participants" under "Downloads". In order to make full use of the VC sessions, we recommend to use headsets.
